University Archives:  A Photographic History of UNC: Buildings and Grounds: West Campus

In 1956, President William Ross purchased land for the west campus, officially known as the Darrell Holmes Campus, from former trustee J. M. B. Petrikin.  For $537,664 he obtained the land where the UC stands as well as that west of 11th Avenue and south of 20th Street.

Bishop Lehr, opened in 1962, was the first building built on the west campus.  It replaced Kepner as the home of the Laboratory School.

The College Center opened in 1965.  It was the second building constructed on the Petrikin farm land. The Judy Farr Center (middle photo) was one of the buildings moved so that the College Center could be built. The College Center was renamed the University Center in 1970.

It wasn’t until after the major remodel of the University Center in 1988 that the facility received the heavy student usage for which it was designed.  The atrium and updated cafeteria and dining spaces went far to accomplish this change.

Ross Hall of Science (1964- ) was named for President William Ross; Ross Hall underwent a major remodel from 2001-2003.

McKee Hall was completed in 1968 and houses most of the offices and classrooms of the College of Education.

McCowen Hall, dedicated in 1963, was named after Annie Margaret McCowen, Professor of Elementary Education, 1921-58. Archives has excerpts from Professor McCowen’s diaries in Special Collection 63.

Turner Hall (1968-   ) was named after Glen Turner, Professor of Business Administration and College Comptroller 1940-67.  The lights in the windows spell CSC, Colorado State College.  The University was CSC from 1957-70.

On January, 1970, during the construction of the new library, a fire broke out at the site.  This delayed the Library’s opening by several months.

The new University Library on the west campus was completed in 1971. A few years later, the University Library was renamed in honor of former faculty member and college alumnus, James A. Michener.

Nottingham Field, completed in 1996, is the school’s third athletics field.  It was built with private donations to the University of Northern Colorado Foundation.
