For James Michener, ever the traveler, writing was a process of exploration in which an author discovers who the characters are, why they do what they do, which words are the best choices in a particular sentence and so on. It required long working hours, years of research and draft after draft. Only to the uninitiated could writing be regarded as a tranquil afternoon on the veranda with a mug of tea, a fountain pen and a sheaf of paper, waiting for the muse to arrive, in Michener's view.

This exhibit features documents and photos from the James A. Michener Special Collection housed at the University of Northern Colorado and was created in honor of the centennial of Michener's birth in 1907.
