The mission of the Center for Language Arts Education (CLAE) is to support, promote, and develop collaborative and interdisciplinary language arts education at the University of Northern Colorado, in pre-K-12 schools in the State of Colorado, and throughout the region and country. The Center is particularly focused on the multicultural aspects of the language arts and the language arts education of pre-K-12 bilingual students and students learning English as a new language.
The Center for Language Arts Education sponsors and supports community and school outreach initiatives such as the Colorado Poets Center and the Colorado Migratory Labor Project, co-sponsors lectures and conferences, supports grant-funded initiatives, promotes faculty research in the area of pre-K-12 language arts and multicultural education, and provides web-based links to language arts-related professional organizations, UNC courses, curricular resources, and research reports related to language arts issues in schools.
Housed in the School of Modern Languages and Cultural Studies in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, the Center is directed by Dr. Elizabeth Franklin, Director of the School of Modern Languages and Cultural Studies and professor of ESL and Bilingual Education in Hispanic Studies. Advisory Board members include faculty from Africana Studies, English, Hispanic Studies (ESL/Bilingual, Spanish) and Teacher Education (Elementary Education, Early Childhood, ESL/Bilingual Education, Reading).

Oral History and
Migratory Labor Project
Housed in Mexican American Studies and the Center for Language Arts Education and directed by Dr. Priscilla Falcón, the Colorado Oral History and Migratory Labor Project seeks to document the history of Mexican origin migratory labor in Northern Colorado from 1942 to the present. On March 14, 2008, the Center sponsored the film, BRATS: Our Journey Home. The film’s director, Donna Musil, was available for a question and answer session after the film.
On April 7, 2008, Dr. Deborah Romero (Hispanic Studies) gave a lecture titled “Engaging Latino Youth in Multimodal Learning Contexts: Possibilities and Challenges.”
On June 17, 2008, Dr. Michael Opitz (Teacher Education/Reading) gave a lecture titled “Fluency Without Nonsense.”

2007-2008
On February 1, 2008, the Center for Language Arts Education co-sponsored a forum on immigration and youth, Immigrant and Citizen Children: Education at a Crossroads. Dr. Eugene Garcia from Arizona State University gave the keynote, which addressed the national longitudinal study of the literacy and math development of elementary age Hispanic children, Para Nuestros Ninos: The School Readiness and Academic Achievement in Reading and Mathematics of Young Hispanic Children in the United States.
On April 18, 2008, Dr. Nancy Boyd-Franklin, Psychologist and Professor at Rutgers University, gave a half-day workshop on Best Practices in Therapy with African-American Couples and Families.
