Melanson worked in newspaper advertising for four years on both dailies
and weeklies in Colorado, including the Grand Junction Daily Sentinel and
the Sentinel Newspapers in Denver. While a graduate student, he did a summer
internship in a Denver advertising agency working on a special project
developing advertising plans for small businesses.
His academic career began at the University of Northern Colorado
in the mid 1970s teaching advertising and public relations courses.
He was chairman of the Department of Journalism from 1976 to 1982,
coordinator of the graduate program in journalism from 1985 to 1990.
Then in 1991, he joined the faculty at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln
where he was an associate professor of advertising in the College
of Journalism and Mass Communications. In 1994 he took a position
at Texas Tech University in the School of Mass Communications, where
he taught advertising and public relations. He returned to the University
of Northern Colorado in 1998.
Melanson serves as coordinator of the Public Relations and Advertising
Media emphasis, coordinator of the journalism and mass communications internship program
and adviser to the UNC campus chapter of the National Association
of Black Journalists. He served on the board of directors of the
United Way of Weld County and as chair of the United Way's Marketing
Communications Committee. Also, Melanson is the immediate past-president of
the Southwest Education Council for Journalism and Mass Communication.
