Charles Ingold, Professor and Program Coordinator

Ph.D. 1983 University of Colorado, Communication (Emphasis: Mass Communication)

M.A. 1978 Colorado State University, Speech Communication (Emphasis: Broadcasting)

B.A. 1974 University of Akron (Ohio), Mass Media and Communication (Emphasis: Radio-TV-Film)

Ingold has taught television production, radio production, scriptwriting, broadcast news, mass communication law, mass communication theory and research, public speaking, audience analysis, introduction to graduate studies, and quantitative research methods. He has produced cable television programs and supervised student cable productions. He has conducted research projects focusing on audiences, uses and gratifications of media, and media effects. He has been published in Psychological Reports and Journalism Educator.

Ingold believes JMC students need education that:

(1) is immediately useful for understanding professional work in media, and

(2) provides liberal arts knowledge, and understanding that is also practical but in broader and longer range ways that serve effectiveness and freedom for the individual and society.

He endeavors to make the theoretical and philosophical relevant for the student seeking practical, career-focused education, and to educate students who are not technically inclined initially in fairly technical aspects of mass communication. To accomplish ethical objectives, effective relationships with audiences and readers, and self-actualization, the JMC student needs practical skills, but also knowledge and understanding of culture and fellow humans. All media professionals and all those holding college degrees in the mass communications disciplines need to understand theory and research, and to be able to practice mass communication professionally. They need to understand media functions, effects, limitations, and potential, whether they intend to be news editors, video producers, radio announcers, public relations directors, advertising salespersons, graduate students, researchers, educators, citizens, or parents.
