International Studies

Student immersed in a book

United States involvement in international activities continues to expand rapidly. This expansion has created a critical need for people trained in business, government, social services, technical advising, and public relations. In his 1982 book, The Tongue-Tied American: Confronting the Foreign Language Crisis, U.S. Senator Paul Simon points out that a mere 1,000 American college students graduate each year with majors in International Studies—yet there are jobs for 200,000.

To give students a greater awareness and understanding of global political, economic, and social conditions, UNC has developed an interdisciplinary major in International Studies. The increasing political and economic interdependence of nations demands that, to function effectively, students entering international careers possess an international perspective. At present, there are approximately 20-25 students majoring in International Studies at UNC.

When you major in International Studies at UNC, you will come to understand the complex world community from a variety of important angles. Faculty in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences will teach you economics, help you develop a sophisticated awareness of international politics, culture, geography, and history and teach you to speak, read and write well in a foreign language.

The benefits of such a diverse program are many. You can possess a cultural awareness and sensitivity that permit you to enjoy the many cultural opportunities of an international career. You will be prepared to work effectively in both private and public agencies with an international focus. You also will be well prepared to enter graduate school in International Studies if you choose.
