Information Security

Windows Rights Management (WRM)

When used, Windows Rights Management (WRM) helps us protect our most sensitive information and lets content owners control how their content is used--who can open and modify documents, how long users can access it.

WRM can help alleviate the challenges we face by helping us to safeguard confidential information. By enabling the persistent protection of information in electronic files and e-mail messages, regardless of location, we can keep PII information protected from unauthorized use.

When using WRM Content is protected with RSA 1024-bit encryption and authentication so that information will be safe in transit and will remain with the document, no matter where it goes.

  • For example, encrypted content stored on a lost USB drive will not be accessible and viewable to any unauthorized viewer, regardless of location
  • This information protection technology helps safeguard digital information from unauthorized use both:  online and offline inside and outside of the organization
  • Individuals can define exactly how recipients can use data, and can place limitations on who can open, modify, print, copy, and forward certain information, such as in financial reports, student data, and e-mail messages.
  • WRM provides that ability to wrap e-mail messages with security measures as a means to prevent a message from being forwarded or copied
  • WRM Can also be used to protect content created in the following Microsoft Office applications:
    • Word
    • Excel
    • PowerPoint
These are security measures that remain with the e-mail wherever it goes.
To have WRM setup on your system call the TSC at 351-4357 or submit a request on line at: https://www.unco.edu/it/itforms/callsub.htm
