Password Requirements
User accounts are the primary form of digital identity and access to UNC computer resources. As such, it is vitally important that these digital identities be managed in a consistent and secure fashion.
All individuals who access the University of Northern Colorado's computing infrastructure have a responsibility to safeguard these systems and their data. User accounts and passwords are two mechanisms through which this is acccomplished.
- Passwords are required to be a minimum of 9 characters long for all user accounts.
- The time between password changes is 90 days.
- User accounts with non-expiring passwords are prohibited.
- Password complexity is required (one numeric and/or special character as well as alphabetic characters).
Storing Your Password
- Avoid writing down your password.
- If you must write down your password, ensure it is locked away and unavailable to anyone else (treat it like you would your wallet). Do not hide it around your desk, mousepad or keyboard.
- Purchased software packages sometimes include the option to store your password so that you do not have to enter it during future logins. Users must not electronically store or save passwords for any UNC application without encryption. Do not select "store password" when installing or using applications on UNC systems.
Confidentiality
- Protect your password like your wallet or bankcard pin number.
- Do not share your password with anyone. Users are responsible and accountable for any use of their account and/or user ID.
- Information Technology will never ask you for your password. Any email and/or phone call where someone asks you for that information is not a legitimate email/phone call.
Please contact the Technical Support Center at (970) 351-4357 if you have questions regarding your password or have problems resetting your password.
