A: CIRT stands for Computer Incident Response Team.

Q: What is the purpose of CIRT?

A: System intruders, computer viruses, and malicious users can potentially exploit vulnerabilities and breach the information security of an organization. These incidents require a skilled and rapid response to prevent significant damage. In consideration of this, UNC IT has established the CIRT to manage incidents, minimize the damage and exposure, and bring the systems under control.

A: An incident is defined as: any event that has, or could have, resulted in loss or damage to UNC’s information and information systems. It is any adverse event whereby some aspect of information security could be threatened.  The following are considered incidents:

    • Destruction of data
    • Loss of system integrity, system degradation or denial of service
    • Loss of data integrity
    • Unauthorized use of resources
    • Any other actual or attempted penetration of system security

Q: Who reports an incident?

A: A primary means of incident identification will come from the UNC IT staff.  However, anyone can be witness to an incident or identify that an incident has occurred.  Any member of the UNC Faculty, Staff, or Student Body could identify an incident.  Viruses, intrusion and theft will be the majority of incidents reported.
