Spam Quarantine Summary

Suggested Practices

Within the Barracuda quarantine inbox, users can click on any of the links to effect various actions like Deliver, Whitelist or Delete an email though a simple web interface. From here, users can search, sort, and review email determined to be quarantined. With a single click on the Whilelist option, users can have it added to their personal allowed list, and have the email delivered to the user inbox by clicking on the delivery option. The Junk Box itself is kept at the network perimeter—off the email server—decreasing both risk and load.

Quarantine Items:

  • Personal allowed and blocked lists:
    • Whitelist:  The list of email addresses or domains from which the user always wish to receive messages. The only time the Barracuda Spam Firewall blocks a message from someone on the user's Whitelist is when the message contains a virus or a disallowed attachment file extension. Click on the Preferences Tab to add to this list.
    • Blacklist:  The list of senders from whom the user never want to receive messages. The Barracuda Spam Firewall immediately discards messages from senders on the user's blacklist. These messages are not tagged or quarantined and cannot be recovered. The sender does not receive a notice that the message was deleted, and neither does the user. The only time a blacklisted email address is delivered is if the same email address also appears in the user's Whitelist. Click on the Preferences Tab to add to this list.

  • To un-quarantine a message: For a message to be delivered a single time, without adding the sender to the Whitelist, the user can simply click the 'Deliver' button. To deliver the message as well as add the sender to the Whitelist, the user must first click 'Whitelist,' and then the 'Deliver' button.
  • Leaving a quarantined item flagged as spam: Simply leave the message in the quarantine box or press the 'Delete' button next to the appropriate message. This will delete the item from the user's box, as well as improve Barracuda's spam learning techniques to help catch future spam.
  • Personal settings: Users can establish how aggressively to filter by category of mail and what languages they wish to filter.
  • Spam Quarantine Summary Personal Settings: Users can determine the timing and frequency of the Junk Box Summary, the language they wish to view it in, and the types of quarantined emails they want to see.
  • Delegating Access: Users can delegate access to spam management. For example, administrators or executives can delegate access to an assistant, or employees can delegate access to a co-worker when on vacation.

The web interface link to access the Quarantine inbox for Faculty, Staff, and Students is:

Faculty and Staff select 'Fac/Staff' from the drop-down box, and login with their normal Exchange PDID.
Students select the 'STUDENT' option in the drop-down box, and login with their BearMail PDID (omitting '@blue.unco.edu').
