UNC's Virtual Private Network

A Virtual Private Network (VPN) connects remote users or sites to the UNC network via the Internet.  It uses sophisticated public key encryption to ensure that all of the data passing over the Internet is secure and protected.

Once a VPN connection is established, the remote user or site can do everything they would normally be able to do if they were working in an office on-campus directly connected to the LAN.

The need for UNC’s Virtual Private Network came about from heightened security on campus.  Some devices deemed as "mission critical" have been restricted from general internet access, thus only accessible with an on-campus IP address of 138.86.X.X.  In order to accommodate valid off-campus access, a VPN connection needs to be established.

UNC resources accessible via the VPN

  • Mainframe
         Talisman
         XDB
         FRS
         TSO
         EIO
  • Publishing to http://www.unco.edu
  • MagicTSD
  • http://Intranet.unco.edu
  • ftp://ftp.unco.edu

Other benefits of the VPN (not supported by UNC IT Staff)
