Rudo y Cursi (Mexico, 2008, 103 minutes)
Featuring the directorial debut of Carlos Cuaron, and starring popular Mexican actors Diego Luna (Beto/Rudo) and Gael Garcia Bernal (Tato/Cursi), Rudo y Cursi is the story of two half-brothers who rival each other inside the world of professional soccer. Working a on a banana plantation and barely making ends meet, their skill at soccer gets them noticed by a professional soccer scout, who recruits them. They end up on different teams, Beto earning the nickname Rudo (rough) and Tato the nickname Cursi (corny). Their love/hate relationship, struggles with success, gambling, women, and other distractions provide an engaging blend of human drama and comedy, in large part due to the strong chemistry between the two stars.
