An adult retelling of the Grimm Brothers’ Snow White fairy tale, Blancanieves is an homage to European silent films. This Drama/Fantasy is set in Andalusia, Spain in the 1920’s. A famous bullfighter named Antonio Villalta (Daniel Gimenez Cacho) is paralyzed in an accident during a bullfight. After her stepmother murders Antonio and makes it look like an accident, she plots to kill Carmencita also. Carmencita is rescued by a trave ling troop of bullfighting dwarves. She loses her memory, and is renamed Blancanieves by the dwarves. The film is artistic and enthralling, with lush black and white cinematography and an outstanding score. Blancanieves won the Grand Prize at the Boulder International Film Festival, and captured ten 2013 Goya Awards (The Spanish version of Academy Awards) including Best Film and Best Director (Pablo Berger). It also won eight 2013 Spanish Cinema Writers Circle Awards, including Best Film and Best Director.
