Orphanage (Spain, 2007, 105 min.)
Director Juan Antonio Bayona debuts with the chilling, poetic horror film Orphanage, winner of Best Actress, Art Director, Cinematography, Film, Film Editing, New Director, and Sound at the 2007 Barcelona Film Awards. Laura (Belén Rueda) and her family move back into the orphanage where she spent her childhood with the intention of reopening the orphanage as a home for disabled children. But her plan strays from its original objective when her son, Simón (Roger Príncep), begins seeing five invisible children. After disregarding Simón’s assertion, she and her husband, Carlos (Fernando Cayo) continue with their plans of reopening the orphanage as a home for disabled children. Only when her son disappears does Laura begin to understand the mystery of the five invisible children and the history of the place she once called home.
