A Better Life
(United States, 2011, 98 min.)
Directed by Chris Weitz, producer of Nick and Nora’s Infinite Playlist, In Good Company, and executive producer of American Reunion, A Better Life tells the story of Carlos Galindo (Academy Award nominated Demián Bichir, 2012), a Mexican single parent, and his teenage son Luis (José Julián) as they struggle to live in California.  Carlos, desperate to find success in Los Angeles, begins a career as a gardener.  He purchases a truck to assist him on his mission to ensure his son’s safety and keep food on the table.  But before he can begin to attain his desires, his truck is stolen by a new employee.  Carlos and Luis embark on a journey to retrieve the truck and along the way find themselves drawing closer as father and son.  A Better Life, winner of the Virtuoso Award at the 2012 Santa Barbara International Film Festival, embraces the hardships of immigration, poverty, gang life, and the threat of deportation for immigrants from Mexico into Los Angeles.
