A scrapbook story of sex, love, and relationships shaped by history, Beginners explores coming clean in the face of death. After the passing of his wife and the end of a fifty-five year marriage, Hal (Christopher Plummer) confesses to his son Oliver (Ewan McGregor) that he is gay. Oliver comes to terms with his father’s new lifestyle while Hal lives up to his new homosexual identity--complete with house music, purple v-neck sweaters, and a young lover. Remorseful towards past relationships, Oliver listens to the bitter honesty of his latest girlfriend Anna (Mélanie Laurent). But when Hal is stumped by a medical discovery, Oliver must rely on Anna for strength. Hal’s transformation from the hardships of living a lie, to the beauty of living for one’s true self, helps Oliver as he wander through the concept of happiness and everyday living.
