 Professional Development Opportunities

Throughout the course of the school year, RMWP Fellows are invited to participate in a variety of activities designed to enhance their professional development goals. Below you will find a brief description of opportunities available for 2005 and 2006.

Professional Study Team Facilitator

Have you ever wanted to meet with a group of other teachers to read about and discuss an educational issue you all believe is relevant to your school? Now you can by becoming a Professional Study Team Facilitator. RMWP Fellows interested in starting a PST at their school (or with any group of interested educators) are encouraged to complete a PST proposal and submit it by January 6, 2006. Accepted proposals will receive up to $1,000 from the RMWP to support their efforts. You can find applications on the Materials and Forms section of the RMWP Fellows Interactive page.

Invitational Summer Institute Coach

One of the most challenging components of the Invitational Summer Institute is constructing a Teaching Exploration. The inquiry, planning, and development all take a lot of commitment. Fellows from 2004 and 2005 understand the experience only too well! Their expertise in having “been there” makes them the perfect candidates for coaching new 2006 Fellows. Applications for this paid position will be available soon. Look for them on our RMWP Fellows Interactive page.

RMWP Ambassador at the National Writing Project Annual Meeting

The National Writing Project sponsors an Annual Meeting every November and the Rocky Mountain Writing Project wants to make it easy for Fellows to join in. Three $500 stipends will be awarded each year to Fellows who apply to be a RMWP Ambassador. Everyone who attends the NWP Annual Meeting is treated to helpful workshops, interactive presentations, lively banquets, and the warm, inviting hospitality associated with the National Writing Project. The proposal deadline to be a RMWP Ambassador has passed for 2005, but information about the Annual Meeting is available on the NWP website: www.writingproject.org. Take a look and plan to join us in 2006.

2005 Leadership Summit

On October 7th, ten Rocky Mountain Writing Project Fellows and Facilitators met at Devil’s Thumb Ranch (www.devilsthumbranch.com) to spend the weekend learning about leadership. We focused on our personal professional development plans while at the same time organizing teams to support future RMWP efforts. The mixture of collaboration, community, and cozy cabins in the Rocky Mountains proved to be a winning combination.

Avi Bookclub Leadership Team

One of the most exciting developments to come out of the Leadership Summit was the formation of the Avi Bookclub Leadership Team. This team of RMWP Fellows is responsible for planning a special event with children’s author Avi on March 2nd. In partnership with UNC’s Writers’ Conference, Avi will meet privately with RMWP Fellows for one afternoon to discuss writing, his books, and teaching writing. Members on the Avi Bookclub Leadership Team are busy planning a book club to go in conjunction with this exciting event. Stay tuned.
