 The Invitational Summer Institute

Educators who have a proven track record of effective methods in teaching are identified and invited to attend our Invitational Summer Institute, which is based on the original NWP model of teachers-teaching-teachers. The institute is comprised of 5 weeks of intensive study. Participating teachers will have opportunities to explore their own best practices and instructional “burning questions;" study writing theory and research; experience the writing process by writing themselves and sharing their writing in small groups; and prepare to teach other teachers how to effectively use writing in the classroom.

The Invitational Summer Institute will meet an average of four days a week, 8:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. , June 12 – July 12, 2007 , in the Coors Room in Kepner Hall at the University of Northern Colorado .  The third week will be an overnight retreat on June 27th and 28th in the Rocky Mountains in a large private home in Keystone, Colorado (www.keystoneranch.com).  We will not meet on July 2nd, 3rd or 4th.  Participants should plan to spend time outside of class reading and writing.

Teaching Explorations

During the Invitational Summer Institute each participant will present a Teaching Exploration of an approach to teaching writing that warrants deep inquiry. Explorations in the past have focused on questions about ways to motivate students, approaches to teaching grammar, strategies for engaging students in the revision process, and processes for how to close literacy achievement gaps between boys and girls. While each Teaching Exploration is unique, they all require that teachers reflect on classroom practice.

After the Institute

RMWP Fellows who have been through the Invitational Summer Institute will be invited to join the writing project team to conduct project-sponsored staff development programs and in-school workshops to improve writing instruction in Northeastern Colorado.
School-year staff development programs are offered through the RMWP. Follow-up meetings are held several times a year to bring RMWP Fellows together for continued professional development and to plan ongoing programs and activities. We currently hold an annual Fall Retreat in October and a face-to-face workshop with a Young Adult Author in early March. All past and current RMWP Fellows are encouraged to participate.

Read more about these opportunities on the Professional Development page.
