Dr. Fukuta earned her Ph.D. in linguistics from the University of Hawaii at Manoa.
Dr. Fumiko Fukuta joined the Department of Modern Languages as interim chair in August, 2012. Currently, she is also teaching Japanese. Before moving to Colorado in 2008, she was a professor of Japanese for twenty years from 1988 and 2008 and served as the chair of the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures for 13 years at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh until her retirement of 2008. She is a professor of emeritus of the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh. Between 2010 and 2011, Dr. Fukuta served as the chancellor of Kwassui Women’s University in Nagasaki, Japan, her hometown. In addition to having ample experience as an administrator, she also has significant experience teaching languages using distance learning technologies.
