The Irish poet William Butler Yeats once said, “in dreams begin responsibilities.” The School of English Language and Literature seeks to turn dreams into responsibilities in its programs: the Teaching Major, where our ultimate responsibility is the preparation of English teachers; the Liberal Arts Major, where the imagined life is realized in texts; the Writing Center, where thoughts become words. In our traditional courses as well as in minor programs such as Writing, Cultural Studies, and Film Studies, we seek to be accountable to a world that is complex, dynamic, and diverse.
Through teaching, research, and service, the members of our faculty create a community for work and learning—to improve the quality of reading and writing, to appreciate our literary heritage, and to understand the power of language.
The School of English Language and Literature celebrates its inaugural year within the College of the Humanities and Social Sciences with enthusiasm, relish, and great anticipation.
