The Crucible has been UNC’s student literary and arts magazine since the 1960s. The United Student Literary Voices (USLV) selects student work to publish in a bi-annual magazine featuring poetry, prose, creative non-fiction, photography, and traditional and digital art. The club is made up of students of a variety of majors and backgrounds; anyone is encouraged to get involved.
In the fall, The Crucible publishes a special themed edition and in the spring, the main edition is published featuring a wide variety of artwork and writing themes and interests. On average, The Crucible receives approximately 100 submissions of student writing and artwork per publication.
The latest issue is available free of charge at the English office in Ross Hall. In addition, we now have e-book issues available on The Crucible's website.
Submit Your Work
All UNC students, as well as undergraduates from any two- or four-year institution, are invited to submit their work. To submit your writing or artwork, email CrucibleUNC@gmail.com with "Your Name-Title-Genre" in the subject line and your submission attached. Writing should be in .doc or .docx format; images can be .png, .jpg, or .gif.
In the body of the email, please include a brief bio about yourself. For your submission, please include the title of your work at the top of the piece, but do not include your name anywhere on the document. All submissions are read blind. Any submissions that have identifying information will be disregarded.
Prose and plays should be under 3000 words, or 12-pages double-spaced. We will consider longer work if it is exceptional. There's no limit for poetry and artwork.
The theme for the Fall 2016 issue of The Crucible is Bedtime Stories.
Meetings are held on Mondays at 5 p.m. in Zachariah's, the food court area of the University Center. During the meetings the club discusses upcoming events and publications; new members are always welcome.
