Human Geography

Information on the Course

The Human Geography Institute focuses on both the initial development of a course and the continued development of existing programs. During the week, we present content lectures, model lessons, discussions of strategies for teaching the course, and ways to prepare students for the AP* Human Geography exam. The following objectives drive the week’s activities:

  • Increase participants’ content knowledge of Human Geography
  • Familiarize participants with texts and other resources
  • Discuss effective implementation of the Human Geography course
  • Review the content, structure, and marking of the AP exam
  • Build a collaborative network with other Human Geography teachers
    All major topics in the Human Geography course outline will be covered.

Staff

Consultant

David PalmerDavid Palmer has taught Social Studies at Eaglecrest High School in the Cherry Creek School district for the past 17 years and currently teaches AP* Human Geography and Honors US History. He is a Colorado Geographic Alliance Teacher Consultant, College Board Consultant and AP* Human Geography reader. David has taught and presented at numerous conferences including the 2006 College Board National Conference. David has an undergraduate degree from the University of Colorado and a Masters from Colorado Christian University.

UNC Faculty

Phil KleinA specialist in geographic education, Phil Klein earned his doctorate in Geography from CU-Boulder in 1993. He has written instructional materials for both elementary and secondary geography and published articles about geography teaching and learning for the Journal of Geography and other journals. He has consulted with several Colorado school districts, helping them develop assessments and leading content workshops for K-12 teachers. Phil joined the faculty at UNC in 1997 and received the Teaching Excellence Award from its College of Arts and Sciences in 2001. He is currently co-coordinator of the Colorado Geographic Alliance.
