Information on the Course

Join us for a week devoted to improving your Calculus program. Calculus reform and the development of new technology continue to have a major impact on the teaching of calculus. While the usual challenges of teaching calculus remain, we are presented with new challenges as the Calculus exam evolves. We will address these changes and discuss how to effectively help your students learn calculus and prepare for the Calculus AB exam.

You will make this a strong, practical experience as you:

  • Review content of courses and exams, including new content appearing on recent Calculus exams
  • Discuss effective strategies for teaching calculus
  • Learn how to use technology to make your Calculus program successful and interesting
  • Discuss exam grading procedures and review recent exams
  • Discuss how to design and implement an program,including text selection

ConsultantDavid Platt

David Platt has been a fulltime mathematics faculty member at Front Range Community College since August, 2000.  He holds a Ph.D. in mathematics education from the UT-Austin, M.S. in mathematics from Colorado State University, M.S. in computer science from the University of South Carolina at Columbia, and B.A. in mathematics from Western Connecticut State College. He has served as an AP* Exam Reader from 1991 – 1998, and from 2000 – 2006; and as a Table Leader from 2007 to the present.  He has taught AP* Summer Institutes for the College Board from 1992 – 1996, and from 2003 to the present.  He has also presented AP* Professional Development Workshops for the College Board from 1991 – 1998, and from 2002 to the present.  His publications include a module in a pre-calculus mathematics reform textbook and an introductory computer programming textbook.

UNC Faculty

Nathaniel Miller has been on the faculty at UNC since 2001. He has a B.A. in mathematics from Princeton University and an M.S. in computer science and a Ph.D. in mathematics from Cornell University . He has taught both traditional and reformed calculus classes at Cornell and at UNC. He has served as an AP Calculus Exam Reader, and has been the director of the UNC AP Calculus Summer Institute since 2005. His research is in the areas of logic and geometry, and he is the author of the book Euclid and his Twentieth Century Rivals: Diagrams in the Logic of Euclidean Geometry.
