The Schulze Endowment

Enlivening Interdisciplinary Education at UNC

Are you interested in the interdisciplinary aspects of academic life? The Schulze Endowment enlivens interdisciplinary education at the University of Northern Colorado in ways that benefit all students, faculty and the community at large. The endowment enables the university to bring a distinguished person with broad interest in interdisciplinary studies to campus for a year every three years as the Schulze Chair in Interdisciplinary Studies. The Schulze Chair may have expertise in any of the academic or professional disciplines.

Endowment Funded Activities

  • Life of the Mind Courses taught by the visiting Chair
  • Special university-wide lectures on interdisciplinary topics
  • Faculty workshops for development in interdisciplinary education
  • Community outreach activities

The Schulze Endowment was established in 1995 through the support of the Life of the Mind Program, donations from private parties and challenge grants from the Watson Foundation and the National Endowment for the Humanities.  It honors Robert Schulze, former dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and professor of sociology, who retired from the university in 1987. He was known and loved for his remarkable wit, his buoyant and infectious sense of humor, his outstanding writing and communication skills and his passion for academic life.

Contact the Center for Honors, Scholars and Leadership to determine when Life of the Mind courses taught by the visiting Schulze Chair are offered.
