Our Student Honors Council leaders work year-long to bring the Honors Program social and academic programs beyond the classroom. They receive funding from student fees as a student organization and from self-implemented fund raisers. The International Film Series also receives direct allocations through the Student Fee Allocation Process in Spring. Below you will find reports from our past year's officers.

Student Honors Council President

Chris Appleby

It’s been a lot of fun serving as President this semester! Student Honors Council has been busy as usual. The semester started off with an HSL Planning meeting to talk about the future of the Center for Honors, Scholars and Leadership. There are more opportunities than ever to serve in the community thanks to the wonderful dedication of the officers and HSL staff, and I am excited to see what opportunities arise because of HSL. We also had another successful fundraiser with Alberto’s this October when we delivered over 200 delicious breakfast burritos around campus. Thanks to everyone who helped out! I have really enjoyed getting to know other Honors students, and I am very grateful for all the volunteers that make Honors so wonderful!

There will undoubtedly be many more opportunities to serve both on-campus and off during this current semester. We are planning at least one more fundraiser, and the student elections for the 2009-2010 Student Honors Council will be in March. I encourage anyone who is interested to run for an office, it really is a fun way to be involved with a great program.

Vice President of Social affiars

MacKenzie Wiggs

This past semester the office of Social Affairs has been busy supporting such annual events as our Welcome Back BBQ and of course pizza seminars and MIND Files.  This fall's Welcome Back BBQ was our biggest ever, and both new and returning students got the chance to get together and also meet professors and alumni.  Students also attended MIND Files night in Decker Hall where they learned of upcoming MIND courses and meet professors.  The pizza seminar in Fall featured Katiana Jones talking about her trip to Senegal and a presentation for anyone interested in studying abroad.  Jenny also arranged for interested students to attend events hosted by the School of Music and Performing Arts.  We are very excited about the events this Spring.  We hope to see all Honors students there!

Financial Officer Report

Greetings from the financial office of the Student Honors Council. Our burrito fundraiser this semester brought in over $150 to help fund SHC events. Thank you to all the volunteers who helped out this semester. A special thanks goes out to Kyle Fabatz, Chris Appleby and Alicia Smith who put in more than their fair share making this fundraiser happen. I hope everyone has a happy holiday and I will see you next semester.

Vice President Community Service

Lindy Anderson & Patrick Risk

The Vice President’s of Community Service (Lindy Anderson and Patrick Risk) are responsible for setting up various volunteer activities for Honors student participation. While volunteering is not a requirement for Honors students, they are highly encouraged  to give back to the community and be civically engaged citizens. Fall semester 2008, Honors students spent time volunteering with the City of Greeley for the annual Trick or Treat Street and with Habitat for Humanity. More Habitat volunteer days are being  set up for spring semester, along with continuing to establish new lasting relationships with community service representatives. A running contact was also established with the Weld County Humane Society, and volunteer opportunities are being scheduled with them. Two events were organized with the Weld County Food Bank and more are being planned. We are dedicated to searching for organizations where Honors students can lend a helping hand and hope that all of you take advantage of these opportunities for service. Thanks for a great fall semester! - Patrick

Vice President International Film Series

Melissa Jeffries and Alicia Smith

This past Fall semester we mainly focused on sending out weekly emails describing the film that week and asking for volunteers to help with posters and tickets. We are now also creating Facebook events for every film, and the group has been doing am amazing job on putting together and distributing the IFS posters.  Additionally, starting Fall semester , our brilliant Director, Luke, had the idea of doing mailbox stuffers that went into the dorm mailboxes on campus. Basically our job as co-VPs of IFS is to advertise the films and arrange volunteers for IFS. Although it is time consuming, the position is fun - we get to see all the films for free! In Fall semseter my favorite movie was La Vie en Rose. It was a fascinating, yet tragic story. -Alicia

The International Film Series (IFS) was very successful this past Fall semester. We continued to raffle off prizes, showed award winning films, and supported a friendly atmosphere. We always need volunteers to assist with the smooth operation of IFS. Volunteers have a simple job. All you and one or two of your friends need to do is: come 15 minutes early to the showing of your choice and pick one of three jobs (cashier, tally up attendees, or hand out raffle tickets as patrons walk into Lindou Auditorium). What do you get in return? You can count it towards your community service hours, add it to your resume, and you have the option to see that film FREE! Not to mention you get to hang out with the IFS crew before the film. To volunteer please e-mail us at www.unco.edu/ifs. For a full list of films, showings, and synopsizes please visit www.unco.edu/ifs. - Melissa

Vice President Public Relations

Jen Koops and Kayla Czmowski

This past Fall semester Kayla and I tried to continue the updating process to the Honors Newsletter.  I really enjoyed this position and had the opportunity to hear the stories from all over the Honors community.   Our job would be immensely harder if it were not for all the amazing contributions that we receive from all of the Honors students, staff, and faculty.  I want to thank everyone that submitted and helped to make the newsletter a success! - Jen & Kayla
