UNC Honors Program
Study Abroad & National Student Exchange
Honors students are encouraged to experience a Study Abroad or National Student Exchange program as part of their course of study.
An Honors student planning to take part in a formal international or national student exchange may seek approval from the Honors Program to apply the exchange experience to meet a portion of the Academic Foundations requirements.
The student should submit a formal, written request to the Honors Program for approval to pursue the International or National Student Exchange Option by agreeing to meet the following minimum requirements:
- keep a journal detailing duties, special projects, experiences, and/or observations
- write a 15-20 page paper reflecting on the placement at its completion.
- update their resume to include appropriate reference to the placement.
Students approved to do the International or National Student Exchange Option must complete and submit their journal, reflective paper, and updated resume to the Honors Program following completion of their exchange experience and before the end of the fifth week of classes of the next regular semester for which the student is enrolled at UNC.
If all work has been completed successfully as noted above, 3 course credits under Academic Foundations will be waived from the student’s Honors requirements.
Students planning to pursue the International or National Student Exchange Option should submit their request to the Honors Program and receive approval IN ADVANCE of leaving UNC for their exchange experience.
