Style Show and Musical Festival
6:30 pm - 9:00 pm
Garden Theatre (Rain Location: University Center)
UNC’s final event of Earth Day 2009 will start with a style show for everyone featuring unique, one-of-a-kind clothing that has been designed and constructed from second-hand, thrift store T-shirts. The Environmental Protection Agency estimates that every person living in the United States throws away 68 pounds of fabric waste every year. With the U.S. population at approximately 306 million, that means 20,808,000000 pounds of fabric go into landfills every year. The Department of Health & Human Services estimates that we can expect to live for an average of 77.8 years. That means that the 306 million people living in the U.S. today will discard 1.6 trillion pounds of fabric in their lifetimes. The Worldwatch Institute reported that "Americans spent $6.2 billion on some 478 million T-shirts in 2002." Most are made from cotton, a crop that uses heavy toxic chemical input and water consumption, not to mention the intensive, low to no pay labor of hundreds of thousands of children around the world. While having some fun showing new, hip, clothing made from recycled used T-shirts, the Are You Wearing Green? style show will ask that you think before you buy more, that you look for 100% organic cotton fabric and fair trade clothing. After the show, because we know we can do better, the CELEBRATION will continue with a concert and dancing to The Don’ts and Be Carefuls and to Greeley’s own reggae/jam band, TRICHOME.
