President's Leadership Program
Nubia Duran, Class of 2000
My freshman year of college at UNC, I came in with the attitude of “I’m not doing anything but going to classes and working.” I had done so much in high school that I felt I deserved a reprieve. Well, that lasted a few weeks until I saw a sign calling for applicants to the President’s Leadership Program. Thank goodness I didn’t pass up on the opportunity to apply and thankfully, I was accepted into the first class of PLP. During one class, a man named Matt Lynett who worked at Wells Fargo came to do a guest lecture. Next thing I know, I’ve turned in an application and then I was hired as an intern. That was 10 years ago. Today, I’ve worked my way from Intern, to Teller, to Banker, to Investment Management Associate, to Investment Management Specialist and having my own portfolio of clients.
It was PLP that opened the doors for my career. It was also PLP that enforced and nurtured skills that are valuable in everything I do every day. From working on a team and being an effective team player, to having a passion for philanthropy and giving back to the community, I cannot stress enough how important it is to look back on our own experience with PLP and continue to give back to the program. It is imperative that we contribute to the program that supported us through financial contributions, opportunities for current students, classroom participation, and Alumni Board participation.
