Employment OpportunitiesAbout UNCThe University of Northern Colorado is located north of the Denver metro area in the beautiful, friendly community of Greeley, and has a long, unique history dating back to the late 1800’s. Starting as the State Normal School created to train qualified teachers for the state’s public school system, its cornerstone was laid on June 13, 1890 and opened its doors on October 6th with a staff of four instructors and 96 students offering certification after completing a two-year course. In 1911, the state’s legislature changed the school’s name to Colorado State Teachers College as the college was then offering four years of undergraduate work and granting the Bachelor of Arts degree. In 1935, the name was changed to Colorado State College of Education to recognize the fully developed graduate program, which was started in 1913. Finally, the name was changed to its current name, University of Northern Colorado, to recognize the further growth of the programs and offerings the University provides. Today, the University is a multipurpose institution with a wide range of graduate and undergraduate programs. Its students represent 46 states and 37 countries, and of its Bachelor’s degree recipients, 95.7% are employed or attending graduate school. In addition, the Monfort College of Business’ graduating seniors have again scored in the top 5 percent on a nationally-administered exit exam. The University is one of the main employers in Weld County and the City of Greeley.
