Residence Life Orientation
The beginning of the journey as a college student can be challenging. The Department of Housing & Residence Life assists students as they make their transition to the social and academic life of UNC’s vibrant campus. Events are provided that will help students meet people, become involved on campus, and develop the skills needed to be a successful student at UNC. Students are expected to participate in the events that the Housing & Residence Life staff has prepared from the day the halls open through the beginning of classes. Additional programs designed to ease transition are offered throughout the year in each residence hall.
The Den and the Residential Academic Resource Center
The Den in Harrison Hall and the Residential Academic Resource Center in McCowen Hall, are great in-hall study spaces open to all students. These large spaces are a convenient place to study, receive tutoring, or to take advantage of drop-in services.
Academic Support and Advising conducts all evening
tutoring from The Den, and offers this tutoring service free of charge to UNC students.
Appointments are recommended, and should be made in person at the Academic Support and Advising Office in Michener L149.
Other services available include drop-in academic advising, career advising, and presentations on career and academic skills. Wireless Internet access is also available.
Residential Learning Communities
The Department of Housing & Residence Life offers Residential
Learning communities formed around specific majors or interests.
Students living in these communities have the benefit of living near
students who may be taking similar classes, ease of forming study
groups, contact with staff from their major area, and special programming
geared to their interest area. For more details visit our Living & Learning site.
Faculty Mentor Program
Many residence hall floors recruit faculty members to mentor students on their floors. This program allows students and faculty to have informal interaction outside of the classroom. Faculty participate in this program in different ways- some choose to have meals with students in the dining halls and engage in discussion, others may do presentations related to their fields, or offer career mentoring for students. Residents who have a faculty member who they would like to nominate to be a mentor should contact their resident assistant.
