LA, aka Dr. Lin Suzanne Allen, welcomes you to UNC! As your Faculty In Residence (FIR), I invite you to attend the special Hall Programs I am designing for you this year.
I am a Professor in the School of Communication, Candelaria Hall, where I teach a Persuasion course based on Star Trek episodes and courses in Courtroom Communication. My Persuasion course features “Spock Trials,” and my Courtroom courses feature Mock Trials. I led a study abroad course in Athens, Greece, several summers ago, the birthplace of Communication Studies. I also designed and taught a course in Heroes and Public Memory at UNLV, where I was a Visiting Professor before joining UNC’s faculty.
My interest in studying heroes and legacy began when I was six years old and continued in high school where I participated in debate and drama. A highlight was playing the role of a mother of a soldier missing in action in The death and life of Larry Benson, and performing dramatic readings of Luigi Pirandello’s War.
My next travel destination is Singapore, where I will present research this fall on a Supreme Court case dealing with the legality of using a hovercraft in national parks. The symbol of Singapore is the Merlion, and I like to think of this part-mermaid, part-lion statue as representing various aspects of our persona—playful, mysterious, and strong. And, I love to swim, so this fanciful creation captures my imagination!
As you adjust to your new campus home, I think of the time I spent as a CASA volunteer, visiting children to give them a voice in custody disputes. My visits ranged from foster homes to performances of The Nutcracker, to Christmas programs, school pageants, teacher meetings, soccer and softball practice, and playing numerous games of Apples to Apples and Clue. From one family, I even inherited a kitten, Athena, who is now my “roommate” in my campus studio in Wiebking! Whether in a trailer park, a penthouse, or a residence hall, we all long for a home. To that end, WilKing welcomes you, Once and Future Bears!
I look forward to meeting you soon, imagining that as each of you unpack your suitcase you unpack your dreams. I look forward to hearing your stories, and helping to make your time with WilKing unBEARably wonderful!
Dr. Lin Allen
“Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in the world they’ve been given than to explore the power they have to change it. Impossible is not a fact. It’s an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration. It’s a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary. Impossible is nothing.”
