Student Honors Council Mission

The Student Honors Council works to foster the goals of the University Honors Program, especially that of providing student members a community of intellectually challenging peers. Specifically, the council serves to:

• be a liaison between Honors students and the Honors Director, Assistant Director, and the Coordinating Committee.
• assist and support an active student recruitment program.
• provide leadership in bringing Honors students together through the university for discussions, cultural and social activities, educational programs, and community involvement.

SHC Activities & Events

The Student Honors Council sponsors a variety of activities and events throughout the academic year. Here’s a list of just a few of the events SHC is involved with.

• International Film Series—The International Film Series offers the UNC campus and the surrounding local community a rich variety of foreign and art house films not otherwise available in local theaters. Twelve films are shown each semester in Lindou Auditorium in the Michener Library. A current listing of films can be found on the IFS site.
• Community Service Projects—Honors students volunteer on a variety of projects that range in scope from assisting Habitat for Humanity, to tutoring school children in Weld County School District 6, to collaborating with local non-profit organizations. A guide to volunteer opportunities in Greeley is also maintained by the Council and is available for reference here.
• Pizza Seminars—Members of the Honors and campus community gather for monthly pizza seminars to hear from UNC faculty and staff on items such as faculty research interests, study abroad experiences, and internship opportunities.
• SHC Nights—SHC holds game nights and social outings to give Honors students a chance to socialize and take a break from their regular studies.
• New Student Workshop—This annual workshop is held in the fall to help orient new Honors students to the program and gives them a chance to get to know their peers.
• Peer Mentoring—Through peer mentoring, SHC aims to help new students be successful in Honors by linking them with upperclassmen mentors in the program.

SHC Annual Elections

The Student Honors Council holds annual elections to select officers. All Honors students are encouraged to run for office. Traditional officer positions are listed above under SHC Officers but may be altered, added, or removed as the needs of the Honors community change. Offices may also be held jointly. The Application for Student Honors Council Office can be found on the Forms and Documents page on this Web site. Elections typically occur in late March or early April near the end of the academic year.
