Officers’ Reports

President’s Report

Mike Bradshaw

Great things happened this year in Honors as well as Student Honors Council (SHC). I overheard a faculty member say that this year’s SHC officers were among the best they had ever seen! Excellent job, officers, you are an inspiring bunch. With the transition to our new space in Michener complete and a long list of accomplishments, I am truly grateful for all the hard work of my fellow officers. Thank you to all who helped with the many Honors activities this year, including (but not limited to) Academic Excellence Week, pizza seminars, and MIND Files—as well as the many volunteer activities that Jordan Odo and David Bloemker will touch on in their report.

Thank you to all outgoing officers: you have done an excellent job and deserve recognition for your consistent hard work. Another thank-you to all incoming officers; I look forward to working with you next year.

A fond and proud farewell to our graduating seniors: congratulations and good luck in all that you do. I look forward to seeing your names with “Nobel Prize recipient” written after them.

As many of you know, cancer research, treatment, and support are extremely important to me as both a cancer survivor and a future oncologist. I’d like to extend an extra-special and very personal thank you to all Honors students who participated in the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life at UNC. Thank you for being a part of something great; you certainly have a place in my heart. Relay was a blast! As Co-Event Chair for Relay for Life at UNC, I am pleased to announce that Relay doubled in size this year. You can read more about all the fun and the money we raised at Relay this year in the Honors, Scholars, and Leadership section.

Community Service

Jordan Odo

Spring 2008 proved to be a busy semester for the Student Honors Council and the Honors community with numerous on-campus service projects. In January, several Honors students volunteered at the Asian/Pacific American Student Services’ scholarship fundraiser, “Prosperity.” The guests at the event were treated to an elegant dinner as volunteers served sake and tea.

Honors volunteers were also busy showing a dozen middle school students from John Evans Middle School what a typical day in college looks like. The visiting students built mock schedules, toured the campus, and directed questions to our students. The Gear-Up university visit was done in conjunction with the Center for Human Enrichment.

David Bloemker

In March, a team of six Honors students put on their eye patches and wielded their swords to fight cancer. They raised awareness about cancer and funds to benefit the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life.

The last event that the Honors program volunteered in was the Ha’aheo ’O Hawai’i Club’s 16th annual luau. The event itself attracted around 700 people. Honors volunteers helped the event’s organizers by serving delicious Hawaiian food to the guests and helping transport trays to and from the kitchen.

At the end of the school year, Eva Sorrentino was presented an award for her outstanding contributions to the university community. David and Jordan would like to congratulate Eva and all the other great volunteers who dedicated their time and resources in the name of service leadership.

Social Affairs

Makena Roesch

Hello again, Honors community! It has been an eventful and exciting spring semester for all of us. We finished fall semester with a yuletide bang—our annual Honors, Scholars and Leadership holiday party, which included some new holiday treats like caroling and a gift exchange.

The pizza seminar speaker this semester was Sienna Trapp Bowie, who told us all about the non-profit organization Intercambio de Communidades. This organization works to teach English to the Spanish-speaking communities of Colorado while facilitating cross-cultural understanding and friendship.

Katiana Jones

We also celebrated the opening of the Center for Honors, Scholars and Leadership, the new home of the Honors Program, the Life of the Mind Program, the President's Leadership Program, the Reisher Scholars Program, and the Schulze Endowment. We had plenty of visitors at our “open house” to enjoy the snacks provided and to admire the new space.

At the end of the semester, we heard from Dean Andrew Svedlow during our annual spring banquet, where we gathered to celebrate the accomplishments of the Honors community. You can read more about the banquet and the entertaining and insightful words of Dean Svedlow in the News of Recent Events section of our newsletter.

Thank you for a great year! We loved having the chance to serve as your Co-Vice Presidents of Social Affairs. Although we will be studying abroad next year, we look forward to sharing more wonderful Honors experiences with you when we return. Best of luck in the coming year!

Public Relations

David Zartman

The Student Honors Council continued to expand its contacts within the university and build a greater community base within the local area.  We were able to take advantage of fabulous opportunities to work together with the Decker community to bring in professors and other presenters from across campus to share their expertise with us. The schools and programs that were represented in these events include physics, chemistry, English, economics, the Center for International Education, Academic Support and Advising, the Life of the Mind Program, and the President’s Leadership Program.

August Heckenbach

In our work with the Honors Report, we continued to build on and expand the story offerings for this Spring/Summer edition.  We really want to recognize and thank Katie Goulet for helping to compile this edition of the newsletter, too. We couldn’t have done it without her!

As we both prepare to graduate in the coming year, we will be stepping down from our council offices.  We’ve both served on Student Honors Council for the past three years and have enjoyed being a part of the Honors Program leadership.  We hope other students will consider making significant contributions of their time and talents in the future as well!

Finance Report

Chris Appleby

Hello, everyone! The school year has ended, and it has been a great year for the finance department of Student Honors Council (SHC). During the spring semester, Kyle and I organized two breakfast burrito sales with Greeley’s own Alberto’s Mexican Restaurant. Each burrito sale yielded about $200 in profit, and it has been a pleasure continuing to do business with Alberto’s. Their delicious breakfast burritos are enjoyed throughout campus, and the sales are a great way to support the local community. Because of our ongoing relationship with Alberto’s, we were offered a deeper discount for the burritos, yielding a higher profit margin for our second sale.

Kyle Fabatz

In addition to sponsoring many Honors and SHC events, the money earned from these fundraisers will be used to support SHC members in attending the National Collegiate Honors Council this fall in Denver. Like the conference in Philadelphia that Kyle and I were fortunate enough to attend, the Denver conference will provide seminars and events to help make the Honors Program at UNC the best it can be. Our goal in the finance position is to provide funds for all of the SHC officers to attend this valuable conference.

We also yielded a profit from the Honors’ Spring Banquet. This will provide further funding for the conference as well as other Honors events, such as the Honors, Scholars, and Leadership holiday party and the annual get-together with CU Honors students.

Kyle and I are extremely thankful for everyone who has helped out this semester; we could not have successful fundraisers without our dedicated volunteers. While it was sometimes difficult to wake up early in the morning to deliver the breakfast burritos, it was great knowing that we could always count on everyone to show up. It has been great working with the Honors community, and we are excited to serve SHC again next year.

International Film Series: Director’s Report

Katie Goulet

I hope that you enjoyed our selection of international and independent cinema this year! The International Film Series (IFS) was able to bring in some provocative documentaries, a splash of film noir, a trip to dream world with The Science of Sleep, and a rowdy rendition of The Rocky Horror Picture Show for the spring semester. For those of you who weren’t able to catch some of these movies at their regular show times, IFS was happy to welcome patrons to an additional Friday screening on three separate occasions during the spring semester.

Aside from the great films, IFS also enjoyed a number of partnerships with other campus units. Our patrons could read a weekly review of each of our scheduled films in The Mirror, and we also collaborated on presenting several films for the spring semester. You can read more about these cooperative efforts in the Honors Connections section.

As your IFS Director, I also examined the history, successes, and strengths of IFS this year to develop new ideas for enhancing the series. We received some great suggestions for making IFS an even better experience for our patrons through our online survey, so thank you to those of you who participated. With the continued support of our volunteers and staff, IFS hopes to implement some of these ideas for improvement in the upcoming year.

Angie Bartleson will be taking over as Director for 07-08, and she has an exciting line-up of films waiting for you in the fall and spring. Make sure you don’t miss our programming schedule at www.unco.edu/ifs/.

International Film Series: Vice Presidents’ Report

Angie Bartleson

This past year was an interesting time in the life of the International Film Series (IFS). Despite projector breakdowns and some frustrations, the series is still going strong. The superior leadership of our Director (who is now on to bigger and better things), some good turnouts, and some incredible films made all the work worthwhile.

We hope that the messages from our latest season of films stay with you throughout the summer. However, if you happened to miss any of our fascinating selections over the past year, summer is a great time to remedy this; just head on over to the IFS website—www.unco.edu/ifs—and read about our most recent titles or even browse the film archive.

Bethany Harrington

The spring semester offered many noteworthy films for patrons. The Rocky Horror Picture Show and the accompanying shadow cast were a great end to the year and a very memorable experience! Some of the favorite films from this past semester were The Science of Sleep, Sophie Scholl: The Final Days, and Quinceañera. While very different in storytelling and cinematography, each of these films touched our souls in some way and enabled us to see the world differently—our goal for every IFS experience.

We want our patrons to come away from our films different from what they were coming in. We want to explore many different sides of life, not just the ones Hollywood tries to expose. We want to glorify the honorable and work to change the dishonorable. With these views in mind, I hope you patronize IFS as often as you can this year. You won’t be disappointed!
