Attending the University of Northern Colorado (UNC) and being part of the University Honors Program have offered me a greater range of opportunities and experiences than I ever imagined as an incoming freshman. Four years ago, I came to UNC from Minnesota to begin my undergraduate career, eager for a new environment, new friends, and new experiences. The many wonderful students, faculty, and staff I met during my freshman year quickly helped me feel at home in Greeley. That first year on third floor Snyder Hall, then the Honors floor, I met another girl from out of state who is still one of my best friends.

I realized early on that getting involved in extracurricular activities would help me make the most of my experience and feel more at home in a new state. I tried many different activities; some I participated in briefly, and others I dedicated much of my time to over the last several years. I wrote articles for The Mirror, volunteered on and off campus, participated in Students in Free Enterprise, went on climbing trips with the Outdoor Adventure Club, and more.

One of the major activities that shaped my time here at UNC was participating in the National Student Exchange (NSE). I spent a semester taking classes at California State University and living in San Bernardino, CA, where my interest in computers turned into a new major and where I met one of my other closest friends, who was also from UNC and participating in NSE.

Choosing to take an active role in the Honors Program and the Student Honors Council (SHC) was very significant for me in both my personal and professional growth. I earned valuable leadership experience serving as the Vice President for Social Affairs and as the SHC President. I also became the Director of the International Film Series for a year through my connections with SHC. Through the Honors Program, I gained invaluable job experience by assisting behind the scenes with Research Day and helping to coordinate the 2006 Western Regional Honors Council conference.

Four years later, I have graduated as the top Honors student for 2007 with concurrent bachelor’s degrees in English and Business Administration, with an emphasis in computer information systems. I am now working for the Monfort College of Business as a grant writer, which will advance my goal of building a career in business communications. I believe that my involvement in Honors, SHC, and other activities played a key role in my academic, professional, and personal success as an undergraduate.
