Welcome to the Greetings and Welcome to the spring edition of the Honors Report in 2005. This year Honors is going through many changes, be they in residence life, curriculum, or broader honors involvement in the university and the community at-large.
In the area of residence life, the Honors Program will bid adieu to the long beloved third floor of Snyder Hall come next fall. However, the change is occurring so that Honors students may reside in a hall all of their own: Decker Hall on Central Campus. This means that students will have a whole building at their disposal, including two lounges, a kitchen, and room for 27 honors students to reside. Although there may be some residual melancholy as we say goodbye to Snyder, Decker Hall promises to be exciting new arena for Honors activities. In the area of curriculum, there are new possibilities percolating for fulfilling the course requirements. While a research experience will still be required and MIND classes will still be taken, possibilities are forming for students to acquire some of their Honors credits through other honorable activities such as travelling abroad or taking an Honors psychology class.
The Life of the Mind Program last semester had many courses in which the students stepped outside the regular course experience to promote special presentations involving the faculty and community. For more on those stories, read the News of Recent Events. The International Film Series is going through its own changes, too, as it works to meet its mission of bringing foreign and art house films to the campus and local community. Speaking of community, UNC’s Honors Program has been developing a connection with the Kittredge Honors Program down at the University of Colorado, Boulder, as well. Last semester, our Student Honors Council hosted a CU-IFS Night, in which honors students from CU came and watched “Coffee and Cigarettes” and hung out with Honors students here. There are now plans for CU to host an event in return. For more information about the night, read the hilarious article by CU’s Cameron Webb that details the happenings for the CU-IFS Night last October. Happy reading,
