University Honors Program

Program Overview

Michener Library

The University Honors Program is designed to offer exceptional students both the resources of a comprehensive university and the individual attention traditionally associated with a small college. It asks that they be alive to the life of the mind and pushes them to raise the expectations they have for themselves and their education. It seeks to involve them in learning, heighten their critical awareness, and encourage their independent thinking and research.

Honors students belong to one of the university’s most active student organizations, the Student Honors Council. The Council plans monthly pizza seminars, various community service projects, and other events for the Honors community. It also sponsors or co-sponsors such campus-wide events as the International Film Series, Works in Progress Symposium, and Research Day.

General Program Requirements

Students are urged to join the Honors Program as freshmen, but they may typically enter up to the second semester of their junior year. All applications must be accompanied by two letters of recommendation and a written statement of intent.

Entering freshmen should have a 3.5 GPA and either be in the top 10 percent of their high school graduating class or have scored a minimum ACT of 27 (composite) or SAT of 1170 (critical reading and math). Prospective students already enrolled at the University of Northern Colorado or those transferring from another college or university need a minimum GPA of 3.25 to be considered for the Honors Program.

Once accepted to Honors, students are expected to register for full-time studies and to maintain at least a 3.25 GPA.

Graduating Honors students are recognized during commencement ceremonies, on their diplomas, and on their transcripts as having graduated with Honors Program Distinction.
