Raymond Krohn

Raymond Krohn is a Part-Time Instructor in History, typically offering both halves of the United States History survey. He earned a B.A. in Art History at John Carroll University in 1999; a M.A. in History at Youngstown State University in 2003; and will receive a Ph.D. in History at Purdue University in December, 2009. Ray specializes in the long American nineteenth century (1790-1920), with emphasis on intellectual and political history, and the histories of slavery and abolitionism, social reform, and race relations.
His dissertation, After the Fire: The Memory of Abolitionism and the Eclipse of Antislavery from the Civil War to the First World War, explores the intersection between race and historical memory in the memorial writings of a number of veteran antislavery activists. The project’s central analytical concern is to assay to what extent elderly abolitionist crusaders revealed commitment to the cause of racial justice as they prepared their movement reminiscences amidst a changing post-bellum climate that witnessed the emancipation of African American slaves, the enfranchisement of the freedmen, and the emergence of a new system of racial control and oppression in the South. His publications include a recent article in The Journal of the Historical Society, titled “Antebellum South Carolina Reconsidered: The Libertarian World of Robert J. Turnbull,” which examines conceptions of liberty in the slaveholding South from the perspective a leading anti-tariff pamphleteer. Other essays have appeared in several reference projects, including The Encyclopedia of U.S. Political History, The Oxford Encyclopedia of African American History, The Encyclopedia of Slave Resistance and Rebellion, The Encyclopedia of Slavery in the Americas, The Encyclopedia of Antislavery and Abolition, and The Encyclopedia of American Reform Movements.
