Erin Jordan

Erin Jordan is currently an associate professor in the History Department at the University of Northern Colorado. She received her B.A. in History and French from Grinnell College in 1993, and her Ph.D. from the University of Iowa in 2000. Dr. Jordan is a medievalist, emphasizing religious and social history in northern France and Belgium in the high Middle Ages. More specialized teaching and research interests include noblewomen, political agency and the cultural implications of religious beliefs.

Her publications to date have investigated questions of monastic practice and religious patronage. Articles have appeared in such journals as the Revue d'Histoire Ecclesiastique, Citeaux, and Revue Benedictine. Her book, Women, Power and Religious Patronage in the Middle Ages was published by Palgrave in May, 2006 as part of their “New Middle Ages” Series. Recent work on the relationship between women, feudal practice, and political agency has culminated in an article entitled “The ‘Abduction’ of Ida of Boulogne: Assessing Women’s Agency in Thirteenth-Century France,” which appeared in the winter 2007 issue of French Historical Studies.

Her next major project will examine the history and economy of Cistercian monasteries and nunneries in the Southern Low Countries. She plans to return to the French and Belgian archives to continue research on this topic in Spring 2007. Dr Jordan has presented papers at numerous scholarly conferences throughout the United States and in Europe.

Dr. Jordan teaches a variety of courses at UNC, ranging from Antiquity to the Early Modern Period. In addition to her upper division Medieval History course, she teaches Ancient Greece and Rome, Women in Europe to 1700, History of the Renaissance and Reformation, and the first part of the Western Civilization survey. As a result of her interest in religious practice, she has developed several courses that examine cultural actions of various faith groups in the Medieval period, including Religious Encounters in the Medieval Mediterranean and Witches, Saints and Holy Wars. She also teaches classes at the graduate level that focus primarily on the medieval period.
