UNC  ETD Submission site at ProQuest

Ordering additional bound copies from ProQuest is an option, but be aware that these are not the same copies you are ordering from UNC’s binder.

If you are planning to publish any portion of your paper in a professional journal or as part of a book, you should read and pay particular attention to the Publishing Guides – Delayed release and other publishing options. We highly recommend placing an embargo on the publishing through ProQuest to give you time to submit your project to a journal or book publisher first.   Check with your journal or book publisher to find out any restrictions they may have regarding their use of a published dissertation.

Visit the ProQuest UNC ETD Submission Site. Read the instructions and note there are three VERY important things you need to be aware of:

  1.  Embed Fonts: must be done in your MS Word document before converting it to a PDF which keeps the fonts from showing up differently in the pdf document. Learn how to embed fonts using MS Word here.
    • For example, if you change from Times New Roman to Courier during your writing process, and then change it again, when converted to a pdf, those changes may show up as goofy style text, and quotation marks may show up as blocks rather than ‘.
    • Check and double check to make sure that your final digital manuscript is complete and fully edited before converting it to a PDF.
    • Check the PDF to make sure it converted cleanly (didn’t move headers or tables around the pages) before you upload it to the UMI ETD Administrator to avoid additional charges.
  2.  Type of Publishing Option: the benefit of participating in Digital UNC is to NOT pay ProQuest for the Open Access Option. Select Traditional Publishing option on their electronic form and they will not charge you, and your Open Access will be free through Digital UNC (through UNC Libraries). IF you choose Open Access, you’ll be charged $160.
  3.  Publishing options include Search engine capability to find your dissertation plus an option to be sold by third party retailers, (Barnes & Noble, Amazon, and other sellers as decided by ProQuest.) This isn’t explained very clearly on the form, but it does state that if you choose Traditional Publishing, you will still receive the royalties for any third-party sales.
