Our sincere greetings and thanks for visiting not only the University of Northern Colorado's GLBTA Resource Center website but also the Trans-Tab Resource specifically. This particular resource is new to the website this summer and we could not be more excited to offer it to the UNC community. The idea for this resource started during the beginning of the Fall 2012 semester. The lack of overall resources for the transgender community not only on our website but also in our office lead to a complete overhaul and refreshing as it were, in order to bring the appropriate resources to this blossoming community on our campus. Out if this need for further resources and information, the Trans-Tab was born. Many e-mails and office visits later (not to mention a phone call or 40), we were able to compile a database with all the contact information of the prudent departments located within UNC. This data is meant to be used by not only incoming freshman but also current students and even UNC Alumni. This resource is designed to be a helping-hand to those people who identify as transgender specifically, while also being just as valuable to those people who identify within the GLBIQA spectrum.
If you click on the buildings located on our Trans-Tab, you will be shown the names and contact information for the people whose office is located within that building. All of the people shown were picked very specifically for their knowledge, expertise and willingness to assist those students who identify within the GLBTIQ spectrum. If you are intimidated about asking questions related to the GLBTIQ community as it pertains to the Housing department here at UNC for example, after using our Trans-Tab you will know that Valerie Nielsen is willing and able to assist you with questions and policies while also being respectful of your identity.
The ultimate hope that came from building this resource is that it will serve as a "college roadmap" for students who identify within the GLBTIQA spectrum. That the resources (in the form of the wonderful staff members whose information is contained within the Trans-Tab) will be used and appreciated by those students who find there assistance makes their college experience all the better for being the amazing Allies that they are. Thank you for using this resource to not only enhance your own college experience but also for making it possible for identifying students in the future to enhance their collegiate experience as well. “In GLBTQA, the A for allies doesn’t just mean those who don’t identify but still support the cause, it’s for everyone within the community that does identify. The GLBTQA community is striving for equality, and everyone within is an ally for the others around them. I make this a priority for my time.”
“To spark change, society must first experience that which needs to be changed to. The concepts of transgenderism cannot become known if those that live it do not show the world we exist. I want to help that become a reality by showing others who I am and helping them learn what it means for me to be me.”
“I will continue to foster an inclusive environment in everything I do here at UNC and act as a role model for how others should be treated. I can only hope that my involvement with these organizations has left a positive impact on the students with whom I have interacted.”
“I also worked for two years at It Takes A Village, an organization in Aurora helping the African American and Mexican Immigrant populations. I also assisted in developing and opening “Trans-Action”, a place for transgendered to get free mental health, HIV testing, and an opportunity to be in community in a safe environment.”
We want to thank the many people at UNC who made this scholarship a possibility for 4 students here on our campus. This process was incredibly moving and impactful to the GLBTA Resource Center and hopefully just as powerful for all those who were able to share their story.
We hope to continue this scholarship legacy and with the help of the UNC and Greeley community will continue to create the inclusive change to better and empower all people.
