Merideth JohnsonMerideth Johnson, a junior communications major and standout defensive volleyball player, hit her stride this season when she was named to the Big Sky Conference All-Academic Team. But her defenses are up only when she’s on the court; in class, she’s open to all UNC has to offer.

“Our teachers and coaches are preparing us for the rest of our lives by making us better people,” Merideth said.

Coach Lyndsey Oates is known for expecting team members to act with integrity on the court, in the classroom and out in the world beyond UNC. Team members must meet rigorous academic standards and participate in numerous community service projects. Merideth appreciates it all. “I know I’d be a totally different person if I wasn’t in this program,” she said.

Merideth is one of more than 400 student-athletes on one of UNC’s 17 intercollegiate teams who are supported by the Blue & Gold Club. The club supports male and female student-athletes with scholarship funds each year. But it’s much more than just a funding mechanism.

“The members also have opportunities to develop relationships with student-athletes that enrich the experiences of both the members and the student-athletes,” said math professor and Blue & Gold Club board member Bob Heiny. “In numerous cases, these connections lead to jobs after graduation for the student-athletes.  The members develop a passion for UNC athletics and support the various programs by attending events regularly.”

All athletics donors now will be recognized as Blue & Gold Club members, a recent change adopted by the new board of directors.

“Our mission and goals have been clearly defined to better serve the Blue & Gold Club vision,” said club director Julie Hill (MA-99). “The Blue & Gold Club will continue to focus on raising funds for scholarships. All the support given to our student-athletes is vital to their academic and athletic success.”

The Blue & Gold Club Board consists of 11 dedicated community members, alumni, and former student-athletes. More board members are needed as the club moves forward. For more information, please contact Julie Hill at or (970) 351-2979 or visit the Blue & Gold Club online.
