Mining and Population


Essential Concepts

In these three activities, students learn where Colorado's mining regions are located, how the population of mining towns and counties changed over time, and the relationship of mining towns and camps to their supply towns.

The following units are under development.



Students will look at the development of agriculture and diverse crops on the Western Slope and the Eastern Plains. They will learn the relation of agriculture areas to soils and water availability, as well learn the importance of proximity to markets and transport systems.

Manufacturing and Services

In this unit students will examine the growth of manufacturing along the Front Range corridor by looking at changes in the number of manufacturing establishments. One focus of this unit will be the development of the steel industry around Pueblo. Students will also explore the historical shift of the mountain economy from mining and extractive industries to tourism and analyze how the perception of resources changes over time.
