To All UNC Faculty Teaching
General Education Courses...

With an eye to improving General Education at UNC and in response to external accountability pressures as well, the General Education Council requires the course-embedded assessment of student performance in all General Education courses that are up for review for continuation in General Education in any given semester.

Whether or not your course will undergo course review this semester, please include on your syllabus the student outcome objectives for the relevant category of General Education courses. Making students aware of the goals of General Education and the ways in which your course contributes to the program’s meeting those goals should enhance their General Education experience.

You might consider, in addition, introducing the course as a General Education course at the beginning of the term—talking with students about why it is part of General Education, about your expectations in the course, and so on. And you can tie course materials to student performance expectations at various points through the term—both informally and as part of your assessment of student performance.

The Council welcomes your contribution to UNC’s General Education program. The General Education program constitutes the heart of the University’s undergraduate curriculum. While students’ majors help them develop competence in their chosen areas of specialization, the University’s real strength lies in its commitment to the liberal education of all its students.

We on the Council deeply appreciate your efforts to maintain General Education’s central role in our intellectual community. Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions or concerns, or if you would like to talk further about the General Education program and its assessment plan.
