Northern Colorado Living
Explore UNC Bear Country
Not only does UNC have a great campus, it’s also located at the heart of Northern Colorado. With 340 days of sunshine, mild winters with light snowfalls October to April and views of the majestic Rockies, Northern Colorado is one gorgeous place to live. At UNC, everything you need, including shopping, entertainment, restaurants and the great outdoors, is only a hop, skip or jump away!
Hop to it!
Or walk, it’s up to you! Fun, food and more are within walking distance from campus:
- Greeley offers a great assortment of restaurants, from chains like Chipotle, Rio Grande Mexican restaurant and Jimmy John’s sandwiches to local favorites like The Kitchen and Romas.*
- For an occasional quiet moment, UNC students can be found sipping a cup of coffee at Margie’s Java Joint right next to campus or taking in an independent or foreign film at Kress Lounge and Cinema.
- Skate up a storm at the Greeley Ice Haus, an indoor ice rink just minutes from the university, which is home to the championship UNC ice hockey club team.
- Find some of the region’s premiere performing and visual arts right on campus. UNC is home to the award-winning Little Theater of the Rockies, three art galleries and music events like the renowned UNC/Greeley Jazz Festival and the annual free Concert Under the Stars series.
- Cheer on the Division I UNC Bears as they battle their Big Sky conference opponents in football, basketball, volleyball, soccer and other sports.
- Buy a new ride or get your bike tuned up right across the street from Central Campus at Roubaix Bicycle Company.*
Skippin’ right along!
Greeley is a mid-sized city so it’s easy to bike or bus to these great spots:
- Bike, hike or rollerblade more than 17 miles of scenic, winding paths on the renowned Poudre River Trail. Toss a Frisbee or kick a ball around at one of Greeley’s 30 parks, several outdoor sports complexes, ball fields and playgrounds. Sports Illustrated selected Greeley as one of the best park/recreation programs in the nation.
- Celebrate Northern Colorado’s diverse population and rich history with parades, food, art and performances at events like Cinco de Mayo, Oktoberfest, Greeley Fiesta, the Annual Arts Picnic and the Greeley Stampede rodeo and music festival.
- Dance and listen to live music or play pool at Cactus Canyon, The Penalty Box or Pitchers.*
- Grab a burger or sit down for a romantic meal at Red Robin, Olive Garden, Texas Roadhouse, Old Chicago and more.*
- Catch a show at Greeley’s Union Colony Civic Center. Choose from a variety of top music acts, plus touring theatre productions, comedians and other great events.
- Shop for clothes, electronics, books and more. Bargain hunters should check out Greeley’s department stores, vintage boutiques and specialty stores like Sports Authority, Best Buy and Target.
Jump! Jump!
Bear Country includes the Rocky Mountains, Denver and more. So if you’ve got a car or can snag a ride, your options are endless:
- Explore the great outdoors! The Rocky Mountains provide unlimited activities like hiking, camping, rock climbing and rafting. During the winter UNC students love to hit the slopes at Winter Park, Breckenridge, Eldora and the many other resorts less than two hours from Greeley.
- Enjoy the view! The snowcapped peaks, thick pine and aspen forests and unique rock formations along the Front Range contrast with the sandstone bluffs and sweeping plains of the Pawnee Grasslands to the east of Greeley.
- Find your way through the Fritzler Corn Maize to the south or soar to new heights at Greeley’s annual Hot Air Balloon Harvest.
- You’ll drive less than an hour to Denver to watch Colorado’s professional sports teams; the Broncos, Avalanche, Nuggets or Rockies.
- Denver is also home to the renowned Denver Center for the Performing Arts, the Denver Art Museum, the Museum of Nature and Science, Elitch Gardens Theme Park, the Downtown Aquarium and tons of other entertainment and cultural venues.
- Drive fifteen minutes to shop at the Loveland Outlet Mall or world-class Centerra Shopping Center. And another few minutes brings you to the Budweiser Events Center, where you can catch big-name music acts, comedians, speakers and more.
- Be entertained by your favorite musical artists that come through Denver and play at amazing venues like Red Rocks Amphitheater, the Pepsi Center, the Fillmore, and many more.
