July H1N1 Flu Cases

On July 12, UNC's Summer Enrichment Program, a two-week residential camp for gifted and talented youth, was ended a week early after 10 participants and three staff members reported symptoms consistent with seasonal flu. The Weld County Department of Public Health and Environment on July 14 informed the University of Northern Colorado that tests for five of the individuals were confirmed as H1N1 cases.

The areas of campus where participants came in contact, including dining rooms, classrooms, residence halls and the University Center were disinfected before reopening to the public.

Arrangements were made for non-affected camp participants to be picked up by family members. Out-of-state participants who exhibited flu-like symptoms were put in quarantine until medical personnel said travel via public transportation was advisable.

"We are reassured that we have not seen any severe illness in these cases and everyone is recovering as expected," Dr. Mark Wallace, executive director of the Weld County Department of Public Health and Environment, said at the time.
