Sept. 2 - E-mail from UNC Health Center

Dear Students, Faculty and Staff:

With reports of influenza in and around our community amid concerns about the H1N1 virus (swine flu), the Student Health Center would like to remind you to take everyday steps to help stay healthy and limit the spread of germs.

Washing hands frequently and covering your mouth and nose when coughing and sneezing, preferably with a tissue or alternatively using the inside portion of your elbow, are a couple of the most important things you can do to help keep germs from spreading and help prevent respiratory illness.  Other tips are at: http://www.cdc.gov/flu/protect/habits.htm

H1N1 symptoms have been consistent with seasonal flu. While it can affect individuals differently, especially those with particular pre-existing health conditions, the virus is presenting at this time as a relatively minor strain. Those who come down with flu-like symptoms, including a fever 100 degrees or higher, a cough or sore throat, should stay at home and avoid work or school until symptom free for 24 hours. A doctor’s visit is usually only necessary for those with severe illness or those who are at high risk for complications from the flu: http://www.cdc.gov/flu/about/disease/symptoms.htm.

Vaccinations for the seasonal flu will be begin on campus this month. A list of scheduled clinics is available at http://www.unco.edu/flu/clinics.html

The H1N1 vaccine that is still under development may be available later this fall.  Visit the CDC website to find out more information and recommendations on this vaccine:   http://www.unco.edu/flu/faq.html#l

The university is providing updates, along with resources that include frequently asked questions and the university’s response in taking necessary precautions, at http://www.unco.edu/flu. I’d encourage you to visit the site for more information.

Sincerely,
