President's Campus Communication 12/18/09

Dear Colleagues,

I have a brief update for you as we wrap up the fall semester.

As you may know from recent news reports, there have not been significant changes in the state budget outlook for fiscal years 2009-10 or 2010-11 since I last wrote to you. The Legislature’s Capital Development and Joint Budget committees held their customary pre-legislative session hearings for higher education earlier this month, and all of the presidents of Colorado’s public institutions stressed the need for greater operational flexibility as state funding decreases. We will continue to monitor the state budget situation closely, so we can decide how best to proceed with our campus budget process early next semester.

Over the past two months, I hosted 13 strategy sessions with campus governance and work groups to discuss how to connect our existing planning efforts in order to articulate a university plan. It’s clear that a great deal of forward-looking work is already under way, and we will be scheduling a few more sessions for early in the spring semester to discuss recurring themes from the initial conversations. We will also be participating in a statewide higher education planning effort initiated by the Governor’s office and hope to have further details about the process by the Jan. 28 Board of Trustees meeting. UNC Trustee Chairman Dick Monfort and former Trustee Jim Lyons were asked by the governor to co-chair the state committee.

I also expect to wrap up the search for a Special Assistant to the President for Diversity early in the spring semester. The search committee has finished its initial review of applications and is scheduling interviews with several candidates.

Thank you for a great fall semester. I appreciated seeing so many of you at our campus holiday party and commencement ceremonies last week.

Happy holidays!

Kay Norton
