Custodial ServicesRecyclingOur Vision...is to ensure a responsible way of recycling that benefits not only the university but also the community it serves. Recycling NewsIn an effort to maximize the recycling program's efficiency and capacity, we are currently in the process of adding a small bin next to the wastebasket of every office and rooms in the Residence Halls throughout the entire campus. Look for a bin in your office in the very near future if you don't have one yet! Meanwhile, check out What Can I Put in My Deskside Recycling Bin for a list of all the paper products that you can recycle through the new system, we think you will be surprised by the variety of material you can dispose of through our services!
In the fall of 2003, UNC welcomed the addition of glass and #1 and #2 plastic recycling to our campus. Due to the success of this recent addition, we have made it easier for all to recycle. All bins formerly used to collect aluminum are currently being converted to commingled. A commingled bin will be used to collect, glass, aluminum, and #1 and #2 plastics within all the academic and administrative buildings on campus. Pictured above is an example of a bin that has been converted for commingled recycling. There are a few exceptions to the bin conversion. Aluminum collection will continue as it has in the past within the Residence Halls. Plastic and glass can be recycled near the trash collection areas for each Residence Hall. Also, the gray bins with a "can crusher" on top will remain for aluminum only along with the cardboard boxes that are located in some buildings. From the HandbookUNC Recycling is coordinated by Custodial Services. The program involves all of the University Community in the way that recycling is handled on campus. Central bins for different commodities are placed in each of the University buildings. Individual containers are given to departments for use in offices and high collection areas. It is the responsibility of the individual departments to get the commodities from the individual containers to the central bins. A list of recyclable commodities is available from the Custodial Office or the website. |
