Writing Center Policies
Services Provided
Clients can receive assistance at any stage of the writing process:
- Understanding the writing assignment
- Brainstorming ideas
- Developing a thesis or hypothesis
- Organizing the writing
- Revising the writing
- Reviewing grammar, punctuation, mechanics, and syntax
- Polishing the final draft
Tutors also read assignments besides essays. They offer help on any writing assignment across the curriculum, in any course or discipline at any level, from undergraduate to post-graduate work, including assignments such as these:
- Essays required for applications to degree programs, scholarships, or job applications
- Clinical reports for students in PTEP, Nursing, and other programs
- Creative Writing Projects
Services the Writing Center Does Not Provide
- Writing Center tutors do not serve as editors.
- The Writing Center is not a "drop-off" service; clients must accompany their work and be prepared to review their writing.
Client Rights and Responsibilities
Writing Center clients have the right to:
- Receive respectful, confidential help with their writing
- Request a particular tutor, if he or she is available.
- Receive 90 minutes of tutoring per week, in one hour or half-hour increments (no sessions longer than 60 minutes with one tutor)
- Book appointments up to three weeks in advance
- Request proof of their visit to provide to their instructors
Writing Center clients have the responsibility to:
- Notify the Writing Center is they are unable to make an appointment
- Understand that THREE missed appointments prohibits a person from using the Writing Center for the current semester
- Bring any assignment guidelines and be prepared to work on their writing
- Understand that the Writing Center serves to help clients improve their writing, not to edit work or guarantee a better grade on an assignment
- Adhere to the University of Northern Colorado's Honor Code
