Students writing

The Writing Center serves all enrolled students, faculty, and staff at the University of Northern Colorado. Our mission is to foster confidence, growth, and self-sufficiency in the writer. To that end, the focus in any consultation is on the writer and what he or she wishes to accomplish with the piece of writing. Clients receive help with a variety of areas, such as discussion of purpose, audience, and the writer’s role in the work; development of ideas, main points, and structure; utilization of primary and secondary sources; utilization of documentation systems; and instruction in grammar. Since we desire to see advancement in the writer’s aptitude and knowledge of writing, we do not edit but instead teach clients how to proofread their own work. Tutors work with all types of writing and with writers from all levels and abilities. Clients benefit from collaborating with knowledgeable, friendly tutors in a positive atmosphere.

To schedule an appointment by phone, call the Writing Center at 351-2056 during office hours and provide the following information:

  • your name
  • phone number
  • the sort of assistance you need
  • name of a preferred tutor
  • a preferred time and an alternate time for an appointment

You can also drop by the Writing Center—in Ross Hall 1230—to schedule an appointment.

Missed Appointments
and Cancelations

Because of the demand for tutoring services, reserved appointment time is at a premium. Therefore, students who miss three appointments and do not call to cancel are marked as “no-shows” and are not allowed to use the Writing Center for the remainder of the semester. Also, students who cancel three or more appointments are not allowed to use the Writing Center for the remainder of the semester.

Online Tutoring

Online Tutoring

Online tutoring is available with either Sonja Scullion or Crystal Brothe. Log in to the scheduling program (http://www.rich16.com/ unco/index.php) and make an appointment with Sonja or Crystal. Please indicate in the comment box that it is an online appointment. Also indicate what specific issues you need help with.

You are allowed to schedule up to 90 minutes per week in either one-hour or half-hour sessions. We prefer you do not schedule a 90-minute appointment in one session, and that you send no more than fifteen pages of text.

E-mail your work as an attachment in either Microsoft Word 1997-2003 compatible mode or .rtf format to center_writing@yahoo.com by the start of the appointment time.

The tutor will use your appointment time to respond to the work using Microsoft Word’s comment feature, and she will email you back the work with her comments.

Turnaround time is 24-48 hours; online tutoring does take a bit longer, so please be patient.
